I contacted Laura J Hoover after being forced into an emergency move from what had seemed like a dream apartment. I had moved into a beautiful gut rehab in Chicago's up and coming West Wicker Park neighborhood and it seemed like my dream apartment. During my eight months there, however, the place turned into a nightmare. Just a couple of months after moving in, the place flooded with backed up sewer water during a really bad storm. The landlord brought over a carpet cleaner right away and ripped up the carpet. He promised to come back to replace the carpet padding and fix the very damaged walls, but never did. A few months later, the water heater in the apartment broke and damaged more walls. Again the landlord promised to come back at a later date to fix the damage and never did. As the winter approached the apartment started to get colder and colder, even though I kept turning up the thermostat. At one point it was so cold in my bedroom that I could see my breath! To top it off, my 2yr old daughter kept getting sick! I called the landlord and wrote him letters, but he refused to do anything stating that all I needed to do was turn the furnace up. I called the city inspector and it was found that the average temp of my apartment was way below the legal limit even though the thermostat was set to 85! After I moved out, the landlord refused to give me back my security deposit instead claiming that I owed rent for not finishing the lease. That's when I contacted Laura J Hoover. She was really great about explaining my rights to me and agreed to take my case. I was worried that it would be too time consuming to file a suit along with working and raising my daughter. I wondered if getting my security deposit back would even be worth it. But after I gave her my documentation, Laura took care of the rest. I barely lifted a finger. She even managed to track down the landlord after the address I gave her turned out to be false. It did take a little while to get things rolling, mostly because it was so hard to serve the landlord, but I never had to appear in court or even speak to that landlord again. Laura was really great about keeping me updated throughout the whole thing. Best of all, she got me my security deposit back along with her court fees, so I didn't actually end up paying anything! I am very happy with the way things turned out. I hope I never have to go through such an awful experience again, but if I have any problems in the future, I won't hesitate to call her!
Laura has one of the sharpest legal minds I have ever worked with. She is a caring, hard working attorney. She did excellent and outstanding work, with great attention to detail. She was in the top 5% of all Student Attorneys I have ever worked with (which is over 100). I would not hesitate to recommend her as an employee or to a potential client for representation.
