I have known Julian for almost 10 years. His sense of ethics and integrity are second only to his charm and wit. He is extraordinarily well-read and well-spoken. I have called on him several times regarding question pertaining to criminal law. He is always very quick to spot potential issues and explain the manner by which those issues should be developed in a light most favorable to the client. Most importantly, Julian is a good friend, has been for a long time, and will be for a lifetime, I'm sure.
I had the pleasure of supervising Julian's day to day activities and projects while he was an extern for Justice Nancy M. Saitta at the Nevada Supreme Court. Julian was willing to take on complex research and writing assignments, work as long as necessary to complete his memoranda by deadlines and produced very good first drafts. Julian understood his abilities and limitations and was able to work independently but was also willing to seek out guidance when necessary. Julian accepted criticism and suggested editing of his work product with grace and his writing continually improved. Overall, Julian was a productive and pleasant member of our chambers team during his summer at the court.
A native of southern California, attorney Julian Gregory has since adopted Nevada as his home state, having resided in Nevada for all of his adult life. While attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, Mr. Gregory worked as an independent technical support consultant, developing a skill set that he now uses to great effect in representing clients who have been accused of computer crimes or whose cases involve electronic evidence or discovery.
Mr. Gregory began attending the William S. Boyd School of Law in Las Vegas in 2007. During his law school tenure, he began to distinguish himself by participating in an externship with the Nevada Supreme Court after his first year. Mr. Gregory later became Articles Editor for the Nevada Law Journal and Business Editor for the UNLV Gaming Law Journal. Mr. Gregory also received two Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) Awards for Judicial Writing and International Criminal Law after receiving the top grade in those classes. Mr. Gregory graduated with his Juris Doctor in 2007 in the top third of his class.
Mr. Gregory’s dedication to criminal defense began with his participation in the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to investigating claims of innocence by indigent inmates. Mr. Gregory spent two years researching the circumstances of a murder case in the search for evidence exculpating his client. Mr. Gregory exercises the same determination in representing his clients today.
In Mr. Gregory’s third year of law school, he began a clerkship with the Federal Public Defender for the District of Nevada, wherein he worked with attorneys for numerous clients seeking state and post-conviction habeas corpus relief in state and federal courts. Having written briefs submitted to the Nevada Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court, Mr. Gregory is a firm believer that the most important characteristic of a defense attorney is the ability to write persuasively.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Gregory clerked for the Honorable Linda Marie Bell of the Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada. Mr. Gregory spent a year learning the ways that a judge weighs the merits of a case and studying the trial techniques of attorneys appearing before the court. With an insider’s view of the courthouse, Mr. Gregory knows the best ways to make a case before a judge.
Following his clerkship, Mr. Gregory has practiced almost exclusively criminal defense, with some brief excursions into personal injury. Mr. Gregory second chaired his first trial in January of 2012, representing a client charged with murder. Since that time, Mr. Gregory has assisted in trying cases ranging from capital murder to mortgage fraud, has tried several misdemeanor domestic violence cases, and has filed numerous appeals and petitions for post-conviction habeas corpus relief. Mr. Gregory also has the distinction of being the first attorney to challenge the City of Las Vegas’s practice of forcibly medicating defendants who have been found incompetent to stand trial.
