I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with John Rodman since 2008. I rarely meet lawyers that have a natural talent for litigation; John Rodman is one of those lawyers. He began working for the Eastern Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office and quickly adapted to the challenge of managing a very intense case load and trial obligations. As John continued to sharpen his trial skills, he quickly became one of the best litigators in the office. In fact, early in his career, John averaged nearly half a dozen felony jury verdicts per year. This was a very impressive feat but not surprising given his level of ambition and appreciation for the duties of a public defender. John takes his job seriously because he knows that he is truly the last line of defense for his indigent clients. At times you will hear him say, “I act as shield for my clients to protect them from accusations brought by the prosecution and when necessary, I act as the sword to combat injustice.” With that being said, there is no question, John Rodman is one of the most aggressive litigators in the EJC Public Defender's Office. His characteristics of courage, dedication and zeal for his client are unparalleled. John is not only a zealous advocate for his clients but he is also a community advocate. He dedicates a large amount of his time speaking to the youth about the collateral consequences of criminal actions with the “I Wish I Knew” program. He also has participated in other valuable community initiatives such as the Mayor's Afterschool Task Force as well as the United States Attorney Re-Entry program. John Rodman not only continues to lead, he continues to inspire.
John co-founded Cox, Rodman, & Middleton Law Firm in January 2017 in order to more fully meet the diverse legal needs of a wider range of citizens than his previous employment allowed. Prior to the firm's formation, Falen O. Cox, Christopher K. Middleton, and he had already worked together as attorneys for more than six years. Over his career, he has resolved more than 1000 felony cases and received jury verdicts in more than 30 major crimes trials. In his former role as a Public Defender, he was one of only four defense attorneys fully assigned to the Major Crimes Division when it began in Chatham County in 2013, and he has received verdicts of acquittal on a wide variety of charged offenses ranging all the way up to murder. He has also won a number of dispositive motions and received many reductions and dismissals on behalf of clients over his career in criminal defense. John has a passion for assisting clients through periods of legal turmoil, and he practices “client-centered representation,” meaning that the client always remains both the focus and the driving force of the direction that the representation takes in pursuit of achievable goals in each client’s best interests. In addition to his work in the courtroom, John is also involved in various community service endeavors. He assisted in creating and expanding the “I Wish I Knew” (IWIK) initiative, which sought to reduce incarceration rates and increase graduation rates by educating and motivating school-aged youth to avoid legal pitfalls as they formulate and pursue life goals. He served as the coordinator and a presenter for the IWIK initiative. Through partnerships with various local organizations, John has presented valuable information to thousands of youth at numerous venues including schools, universities, churches, and community centers. John and his partners are currently expanding community partnerships and developing further community initiatives.
