  A master of research, speaking, and writing historically about both the pre-modern and modern era, Crystal Abbey is both a graduate and a worthy ambassador of our MA in History program at Eastern Illinois University.   Crystal was a GA for me, serving in that role for the purposes of History courses I was teachng at EIU at the time. Crystal was the most reliable GA /TA I have ever seen. She performs every task diligently and quickly, and then asks for more to do. Crystal grasps and incorporates new information so readily that there is no doubt that anything she approaches will be done correctly and well.

  Ms. Abbey's academic ability is the result of character traits and good habits. She is curious. She is a voracious and accurate reader, capable of locating (and retaining) the heart and constituent pieces of complex argument. She absorbs and applies what she has learned quickly, consistently, and in a sustained way (between assignments, between classes, between fields of inquiry). She is disciplined, prompt, and scrupulous in class preparation, even when the preparations are not “for a grade.” She is constitutionally able to tolerate long-term, sustained, unsupervised effort (the very nature of research) without stalling. She does not panic when confronted by uncertainty, a character trait critical to success at any complex, potentially frustrating endeavor. She brings a calm, steady, intense seriousness of purpose to the stress of “not knowing.”
