In all the years I worked with Brian Wommack -- nearly a decade -- I found him to be a first-rate public relations professional – smart, strategic and collaborative. As I've seen myself, Brian knows how to solve problems, manage crises and oversee a team. Above all, he is as decent a person as anyone is ever likely to find.
I worked with Brian at CRN over a six-month period in 2019 while he was SVP of Communications and I was interim SVP of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs. In that period of time, I came to know Brian as one of the best strategic thinkers in a communications function I have ever worked with. I believe Brian's strategic thinking stems from two key traits: First, to be open minded; second, to embrace change. Although he has not had a lengthy career in the supplement industry or in trade associations, these two traits have served Brian and CRN very well. The supplement industry is constantly evolving and non-profit trade groups are organizations that need to better embrace change. Brian's willingness to listen and entertain ideas and perspectives with which he may be less familiar, then his ability to leverage the best of those ideas makes him a high-impact executive in my view. Science/Regulatory and Communications are not necessarily functions that match from a background or business objective standpoint. But our mutual understanding of the importance of thinking outside the box and embracing change made working with Brian for this time period a true pleasure.
When I started Bork & Associates as a firm specializing in litigation communication I needed to find smart, insightful people to help make it a success. Brian was one of the first hires and proved to be one of the best. He proved himself worthy of rapid promotion through his ability to think quickly and creatively. His ability to instill confidence in clients made him invaluable in a business with crises around every corner. Brian helped make us a great success.
When a client has a crisis, you want Brian Wommack on your team. Brian is the consummate professional. He is unflappable and knows what to do and how to do it to help navigate difficult problems. One of his many strengths is that he can provide strong public affairs, communications, and legal expertise. That's a rare--and winning--combination.
I had the good fortune of working with Brian at Powell Tate for five years. In fact, Brian was one of the first people I met at the agency. He has deep experience in crisis communications, public affairs, integrated communications campaigns, media relations and media training. Brian is a smart, strategic communicator and an all-around good guy.
Brian is a skilled and creative strategist with deep expertise in crisis communications and the central role it plays in a best-in-class integrated marketing communications program. He is particularly adept at making the case for proactively preparing an organization for the inevitable corporate mis-step or instance of mis-managment that, in the absence of the proper operational rigor, can quickly spiral out of control and do lasting damage to corporate reputation. Brian is also a valued and trusted client counselor with an open, straightforward approach that has earned him the loyalty and respect of clients at all levels across many industries. In the time that we worked together, I also appreciated his caring and mentorship of more junior team members
I had the pleasure of reporting directly to Brian as a junior staffer at Weber Shandwick and I could not have asked for a better mentor and colleague. He is the utmost professional, took a genuine interest in helping me succeed and offered plenty of opportunities for me to grow and challenge my skills. From my experience, no one is a more dedicated manager than Brian, and I owe a lot of my knowledge and success in communications to my work under him.
“It was a privilege to work with Brian at Powell Tate for 13 years and on more assignments than I can remember. As the leader of our DC crisis practice, he helped clients navigate and avoid tough reputation challenges, and always with great intelligence, insight and charm. It's a pity so much of his work is confidential, because the stories and the successes are legend. He is a class act. When facing a PR battle, I wouldn't want anyone else in the trench with me when the shooting starts.”
Brian led the crisis management practice in our Washington, DC office. I was a member of that team and worked with Brian for a couple of years. His leadership style was steadfast and supportive. Managing a crisis situation for a client is always a time of immense pressure. Those moments require a level head and the ability to pull together a team with an actionable plan to bring about a resolution. One of the many skills that I appreciated about Brian was his calm under such pressure. He treated everyone that he managed with respect and was always fair. He was appreciative of everyone's efforts and took the time to let you know personally that your efforts were appreciated. Brian was also great at tapping into resources across the global network to ensure our clients always had the best comprehensive service. I appreciate his leadership and passion for the work that we did to support our clients.
Brian is a highly experienced crisis communications, public affairs and media expert and consultant. He has advised corporate clients, law firms, foundations and governments on a variety of crisis and change management assignments. He understands how to prepare for a crisis or change environment, how to manage public and internal communication during a crisis, and how to repair reputation in the aftermath of a crisis.
Few people have the opportunity to report to a manager who is also a coach, but I did when I worked with Brian. Brian was my manager for the first year and a half I was at Powell Tate | Weber Shandwick and has continued to be a resource since I moved to the West Coast more than three years ago. He is thoughtful, approachable and humble. As a manager, he truly cares about his team's career development. Specifically, he spends time with employees discussing their goals and interests and advocates for them to make sure they are staffed on projects that will help them achieve their goals. In addition to his leadership responsibilities, he also contributed positively to the office culture by planning and participating in events such as lunch & learns, office celebrations and summer outings. Any employee would be lucky to have Brian as a manager.
I had the pleasure of working with Brian on several crisis communications and new business pursuits at Powell Tate | Weber Shandwick. Beyond his mastery of issues and crisis management, Brian served as a mentor to several of his junior colleagues (myself included). You could not ask for a more thoughtful, encouraging, and supportive leader at the helm of any project. His commitment to enabling the employees below him to reach their full potential is second to none.
There are few public relations professionals who truly understand litigation communications. Brian is one of them. He understands the goal is not to "get" press for one's litigation, but to minimize and manage the media attention that litigation can drive. He has provided invaluable advice for our clients and garnered the trust of our most senior attorneys for his sound judgment and discretion.
Brian is both creative and thoughtful, which is often a rare commodity in the PR agency world. His strategic advice is top notch and he understands how Washington, the media and the public will likely react to client issues.
Brian ensures superb results in all arenas of strategic public relations. Skill, candor, and integrity are Brian's guiding traits.
I had the privilege of working closely with Brian on several crisis and issue management projects, and new business initiatives. As a highly regarded and sought-after advisor, he has a keen mind for helping clients identify and prepare for potential challenges. He truly recognizes that one size never fits all, treating each situation as unique and distinctive. Furthermore, his ability to frame complex situations into clear solutions serves him well in his various roles, whether offering strategic counsel to clients or project guidance as a supervisor. He is a value-driver for any team and an exceptional senior mentor. I wish more individuals had the opportunity to work with Brian, as they too would experience tremendous growth through his presence.
Brian is one of the most level-headed, thoughtful strategists I've ever met. His legal background and years of experience make him the go-to guy for litigation and crisis communications. He will not only figure out what to do, or not do, but he also knows how to build and lead teams of professionals to get the job done in a client-focused, efficient, and effective manner. I worked with Brian for seven years at Powell Tate and recommend him to anyone looking for wise counsel and strong follow through.
Called on Brian a few times for a second opinion on a some thorny issues and crisis/litigation media relations work. He was responsive, wise, and strategic. Sometimes, months would go by and I'd call out of the blue
Brian can be counted on at all times to provide solid advice on dealing with media issues that crop up unexpectedly. He has a unique ability to evaluate a situation and deliver recommendations that produce desired results.
